Last night, 88 pianists simultaneously played Bach’s Prelude in C on 88 beautifully hand painted/hand crafted pianos. It was the Sing For Hope Pianos official launch party!
It was also one of the most incredible events I’ve ever been a part of.Two months ago, Esette and I arrived in the studio. It was pretty empty besides the eclectic gathering of pianos — uprights, grands, newer ones, some really old ones, etc. They were quiet and majestic, but even then you could feel the potential buzzing in the air, potential for the inspiration, art, and music that would be brought forth.
5 days later, Esette and I left the studio. It was still pretty quiet, save for the tinkering of the piano tuners as they fixed up all 88 art-masterpieces-to-be. Most of the pianos were still untouched.Yesterday, Esette and I were reunited with our baby piano — we call him Ninja — in a transformed studio. It was filled with artwork of a level we’d never seen before. The colors, textures, and creativity that spanned the once empty space was unimaginable. John Varvatos’s grand looked like it was encased in steel (I had the fun experience of playing Fur Elise on it); there was one piano covered in white feathers, another with assorted pom poms made of straws. Camera flashes were frequent as people tried to capture every dazzling moment of the night. Bright lights danced off of mosaic glass tiles on two of the pianos, off the guests’ jewelry, the glasses and silver trays. We met other artists, musicians, teachers, executives, all people who love and support the community and the arts.
At 8:08, 88 pianists sat down at the pianos, including myself at Ninja, and played Bach’s Prelude in C, the inaugural piece of this massive project that has brought together so many people of all different ages, backgrounds, and places.
There we were, a bunch of college kids fresh off of a grueling week of final exams at Johns Hopkins, celebrating this night and all the art the city, and the world, had to offer. Esette and I were honored and completely humbled to be in the presence of so many brilliant artists, musicians, and visionaries, each and every one of them.
Be sure to come out to NYC and see all 88 pianos in June! We’ll be giving out art for all.
